Mission Possible: Stuffing the Bus!

By Rev. David Wilson Rogers |  June 25, 2014

From the very beginnings of our denominational tradition as the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), we have had a strong commitment to, and appreciation for, the value of quality education.
Disciples believed from the very beginning that a healthy church was one where the members could study scripture, learn on their own, and use God’s gifts to discern their own understanding of the Gospel message. The Disciples’ commitment to cultivating healthy churches, therefore meant we also had to be committed to cultivating healthy Christians who were fully educated and ready to grow in the faith.
Schools, public education, and higher education have remained critical to our understanding of missional priorities in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) ever since. It is one way that we strive to bring wholeness to our fragmented world.
In Carlsbad and South Eddy County, hundreds of children start school in August without the necessary tools to succeed in school. Simply obtaining the pencils and paper they need to do their schoolwork is, for these children, impossible. The reasons are many, but the result is the same. Children who are expected to excel in the classroom are forced to failure simply because they are not properly equipped to learn. This is, however, a problem that our local community, the United Way of Carlsbad and South Eddy County, and our congregation have chosen to address. This is why we band together to Stuff the Bus!
On Saturday, July 26, our church family will be at the front entrance of Walmart, right next to the big yellow school bus, working to stuff it with school supplies and cash. As a part of our congregational mission outreach, it is important that as many as possible help out with this important project from 10:00 AM until Noon that day.
Contributions may be made through the church as well. If you wish to give a special gift, note “Stuff the Bus” on your donation and 100% of your investment will be given to the United Way for Stuff the Bus. You may also purchase school supplies from any source and bring them to the church before July 26th and they will be added to the collections we make at Walmart that morning.
Investing in the future of our community’s children is investing in the future of the church!
